In this blog I'm going to share with you what kind of job growth the field of biomedical engineering is experiencing we will go over 20 years worth of jobs data for biomedical engineers the five metro areas that have the greatest opportunity for biomedical engineers and at the end of the video we will compare the number of biomedical engineering jobs with some of the other engineering fields coming up hey everybody Steven hak here and this is car wash and we cover career trends if you end up enjoying this blog you can support us by comments biomedical engineering is a profession that researches and develop solutions to biological and medical problems biomedical engineers use their curiosity research and engineering principles to design medical equipment to help others they have created things like artificial internal organs replacements for body parts and machines for diagnosing medical problems alright let's get into the job statistics in the year 1999 there were six thousand four hundred and fifty biomedical engineering jobs by the year 2018 the number of jobs had risen to eighteen thousand nine hundred and seventy jobs almost three times as many as in 1999 what is interesting is that the job growth hasn't been consistent at all from 2003 to 2007 there's a gain of over 8,000 jobs likewise from 2009 to 2015 there was a gain of over six thousand jobs unfortunately the past couple of years haven't been quite as generous from a high of twenty thousand nine hundred eighty jobs in 2015 biomedical engineering jobs have lost 2,000 jobs fortunately the government doesn't think this will continue they are estimating a four percent growth in jobs from 2018 to 2028 which is about as fast as the average occupation so those are the national numbers biomedical engineers because it is a pretty small field where you live is extremely important this map shows where the jobs are for biomedical engineers notice that there is no jobs in Hawaii Alaska Louisiana Alabama South and North Dakota and a couple other states the majority of the jobs are in a handful of states and metro areas so if you have dreams of becoming a biomedical engineering living in Hawaii maybe choose a different career so here are the five metro areas with the greatest opportunity for biomedical engineers in the United States number five is the San Diego metro area with 700 jobs but the average pay is almost 5000 below the national average number four is the Los Angeles metro area which has over 1,000 jobs and the pay is 2,500 over 2,500 above the national average number three is the Minneapolis metro area and this is actually my favorite metro area from biomedical engineers it has plenty of jobs 1,200 jobs the pay is 20,000 over the national average and the cost of living is very reasonable compared to San Jose LA and some of the other really expensive cities number two is the Chicago metro area it has almost 1500 jobs the pay is about four thousand over the national average and the cost living is higher than Minneapolis but still reasonable compared to some of the other expensive cities the metro area with the most opportunity for biomedical engineers is the Boston metro area with almost 2,000 jobs and the pay is almost 11,000 over the national average so those are the five metro areas with the greatest number of jobs for biomedical engineers finally let's compare the number of biomedical engineering jobs with some of the other engineering fields the Bureau of Labor Statistics splits engineering into 17 different fields biomedical engineering is a relatively small field it's the 13th on the list when ranking by number of jobs are you interested in becoming a biomedical engineer let me know in the comments below if you enjoyed this blog you can support us by comments and I'll see you guys next time. Thanks
